President Obama skewered Donald Trump during an appearance of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Wednesday night.
When Mr. Leno asked the president what the deal is between himself and the real estate mogul, Mr. Obama cracked a joke, saying the discord dates back to when he and Mr. Trump were growing up in Kenya.
"We had constant run-ins on the soccer field," Mr. Obama said in the appearance taped Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles. "He wasn't very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America I thought it would be over."
Earlier Wednesday, Mr. Trump, who was born and raised in Queens, New York, and last year pressed the president to release his birth certificate proving he was born in the United States, offered Mr. Obama $5 million to release his college and passport records. Mr. Obama told Mr. Leno that he has never personally met Mr. Trump, although he lampooned him at the White House Correspondent's dinner last year with Mr. Trump in the audience.
The president also said comments about pregnancy and rape made by Richard Mourdock, a Republican candidate for Senate from Indiana, are a perfect reason why men should not be making decisions about women's reproductive issues.
"Rape is rape," he said. "It's a crime. ...These various distinctions about rape don't make much sense to me, don't make any sense to me."
During a Tuesday night debate, Mr. Mourdock defended his opposition to abortion in the cases of rape by saying such pregnancies are "something that God intended to happen."
When Leno asked about the spate of photo identification voting laws approved by several states, Mr. Obama called them a problem and said people should be making it easier to vote, not harder.
Mr. Leno also asked whether the president would ask Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to stay on the job, if he's re-elected, noting that he thought she had done a fine job.
Mr. Obama agreed, but noted that "despite my begging" he thought Mrs. Clinton probably would be leaving to spend more time with her family
"She's done a wonderful job," he said. "I would love for her to stay."
